Getting your Annotated Bibliography Started

Directions: If you are using the two sources from your original annotated bibliography in the phase two AB, then post two new sources with the correct MLA formatting (see LBH). This is an easy seven points for those of you who have already written your annotated bibliographies for phase two, and a good way to get started for those of you who have not. Make sure you include the 2-3 sentences of summary for each source, and 1-2 sentences for why you need that source for your research. Identify in the 1-2 last sentences if you are using one of the sources for definition or context, and/or whether you are using the source to address your question or your purpose. There will be no response to a classmate. Due before class on Monday, March 17th.

  1. Staff, NPR/TED. "How Do Introverts Share Ideas?" NPR. NPR, n.d. Web. 14 Mar. 2014.
This source was an interview/speech with Susan Cain as she expresses her ideals and then actually life experience about being an introvert. She brings up the issue of introverts not being able to share their ideas with the world because of the lack of support that comes from leadership and personality stereotypes. This source will be very useful in giving some support based on experience and creating deeper understanding on introverts for my paper. Also this interview/speech will help define my question of who succeeds more, an introvert or an extrovert.

This article is about defining and describing Jung, Adler, and Freud concepts and theories on personality types. In this source the article compares and analyzes each theory with another concept of personality types and research. I can use this source as more strong evidence to define the terms introvert and extrovert. This source will be used for a definition paragraph in my paper.

  2. YouTube. 12 June 2012. .
Due Process: Juvenile Boot Camp. Website.
The gist of this interview was to see both sides of the debate on whether boot camps for juveniles reduce recidivism or not. The people that were interviewed varied from inmates to officials and criminologists.

This interview is helping greatly by showing actual people that have firsthand experience working with juveniles, as well as the opinions of the inmates themselves. It gives me a better idea of the actual facts and lends credibility to my argument.

This report is talking about the background of boot camps, the alternative to boot camps and shows the definitions and goals of such programs.

This will help my research greatly with finding statistics and the numbers that will give my paper more credibility.

  3. Kumar Aich, Tapas. "Buddha Philosophy and Western Psychology." Indian Journal of Psychiatry (2013): 165-66. Academic Search Complete. Web. 16 Mar. 2014.
The history of Buddhism is great detailed and expansive. Covering only the
Buddha's princely origins, his realization of suffering's grasp from
witnessing The Four Sights, his ascetism, and then his enlightenment and
sermons, only gives an individual a surprisingly small amount of
information and detail regarding Buddhism. In Tapas Kumar Aich's article
the he explores this vastness and provides a great amount of information
and history involving the Buddha and Buddhism. With this article it
provides context into who the Buddha was and what the Four Noble Truths and
Eightfold Path really were intended to be.

The biography of the Buddha is very detailed. It covers decades as well as being very delicate and is integral information. The core teachings are very complex and deep, and any information given is foundational to a paper. Like many of the sources that I use; this source is to be seen as a definition as well as context to my paper.

  4. •What my last paper had:
Jackson, Brenda, and Sharon Anderson. "Hip Hop Culture Around The Globe: Implications For Teaching." Black History Bulletin 72.1 (2009): 22-32. Academic Search Complete. Web. 20 Feb. 2014
This article added information about Hip-Hop history. It also provided information on the global reach of the Hip-Hop culture; the good, the bad, and the ugly of hip-hop; and the global impact made by the Zulu Nation. This helped to expand my argument on the positive objectives and impact of Hip-Hop from the Universal Zulu Nation.

Ralph, Michael. "Hip-Hop." Social Text 27.3_100 (2009): 141-146. Academic Search Complete. Web. 5 Feb. 2014.

This scholarly article provided insight into the origins of hip-hop and its positive and negative impact on disadvantaged communities. It also discussed the commercialization of hip-hop. This article was used to back up my claims on how other emcees look at other emcees that promote the opposite of what Hip-Hop is meant for.

•What's added on to this paper:

QD, III, Israel, Eric N. Brenner, and Richie Colon. "The Freshest Kids." Los Angeles,
    CA: QD3 Entertainment, 2002. YouTube. YouTube Jan 8, 2014. Web. 14 March 2014

This is a documentary about the history of bboying and Hip-Hop, where it came from, how it came to be in both the east and west coast. There is documentation of the history given by members of the Rocksteady Crew, New York City Breakers and many other crews, Kool Herc (the father of Hip-Hop), Afrika Bambattaa (Godfather of Hip-Hop), and KRS-One. This documentary includes a lot of information on a certain part on how the media took bboying from where it started, made it mainstream, dropped it, and the rap scene turned ugly (with gang violence promoted, sex, money, thugs). This can help me prove the side of Hip-Hop that is commodity and mainstream and how its rappers and the corporations had destroyed real Hip-Hop's image in the mainstream. (this gives historical facts)

All Hip-Hop All The Time. "KRS-One talks about rap battles, Lil Wayne, Jay Z, Nelly, Hip-Hop with Omar Starr (OD).".YouTube. YouTube, 13 March 2010. Web. 21 Feb. 2014.

This is an interview Omar Starr conducted with KRS-One in the University of Las Vegas building (UNLV) after a rap battle KRS-One judged on this campus. KRS-One talked about Hip-Hop as a culture of “making $2 stretch”, “rap makes you rich” is a lie, battling/battle history, and Lil Wayne. This will help me because he talks about how rapping is a poor art form and how Hip-Hop is built on wealth from what resources one already has, not what they can have, and this is what I'm proving in my paper. This gives context and backing towards this particular issue and other information that this supports.

  5. Sagan, Carl. "Carl Sagan’s last interview with Charlie Rose" YouTube (2012): Web. 16 Mar. 2014.
Interview touches on the mindset of how one thinks when it comes to distrust in government amongst other important information to prove the psychology of individuals. Sagan states “if we were able to be skeptic with the government then we are up for grabs” This interview supports my paper on the psychology of conspiracy series by stating if we are skeptical when it comes to the government then we leave ourselves vulnerable.

Von Hippel, William and Trivers, Robert. “The evolution and psychology of self-deception” Behavioral and Brain Sciences (2011) 34, 1–56 Web. 14 Mar. 2014.
In this article they argue that self-deception evolved to facilitate interpersonal deception by allowing people to avoid the cues to conscious deception that might reveal deceptive intent. Self-deception has two additional advantages: It eliminates the costly cognitive load that is typically associated with deceiving, and it can minimize retribution if the deception is discovered. Beyond its role in specific acts of deception, self-deceptive self-enhancement also allows people to display more confidence than is warranted, which has a host of social advantages. The question then arises of how the self can be both deceiver and deceived. We propose that this is achieved through dissociations of mental processes, including conscious versus unconscious memories, conscious versus unconscious attitudes, and automatic versus controlled processes. Given the variety of methods for deceiving others, it should come as no surprise that self-deception manifests itself in a number of different psychological processes, and we discuss various types of self-deception. We then discuss the interpersonal versus intrapersonal nature of self-deception before considering the levels of consciousness at which the self can be deceived. Finally, we contrast our evolutionary approach to of self-deception with current theories and debates in psychology and consider some of the costs associated with self-deception. This article supports my evidence by explaining the psychological processes of self-deception and one’s mental processes when deceived.

This Article goes on to describe where this diets origins have spawned from. How scientists looked at where we came from as a way of eating, rather than where we are going. Hunting for food rather than shopping for it. It also talks about the studies that have taken place on animals to see the effects over the last 20 years.

This Documentary is about how we as a society have fallen far from nutrition. How in the times of Hippocrates they had figured out that nutrition is its own medicine for the body. They have many doctors to discuss how the way that main stream corporations and modern medicine have made the majority of the sicknesses that plagues our society.

This Los Angeles Times article is breaking down the overall outcomes associated with a Fast Diet. The journalist goes on to talk about how the results are not instantaneous yet always there. As you continue through this diet the weight continuously sheds off. Your body goes into a bit of a shock at first but gets used to the small portions of food throughout the process.

  8. McReynolds, Kate. “Homeschooling.” ENCOUNTER: Education for Meaning and Social Justice, (20-02; 2007) 36-41.

“Homeschooling” is an article written by Kate McReynolds for Encounter, an alternative education magazine. McReynolds is a clinical psychologist and Associate Editor of Encounter. This article catalogs McReynolds’ encounters with several people involved with homeschooling including: students, educators, parents, and the Artistic Director of a children’s theatre. All contributors to the article elaborated on the success, freedom, and overall enjoyment of the homeschool environment. I chose this article because McReynolds provides a broad consensus of contentment and feeling of success across the varied members of the homeschooled community.

Mintz, Jerry. Alternative Education Resource Organization (AERO). Mintz, Jerry; 2014. Web. 17 Mar 2014.

The Alternative Education Resource Organization (AERO) was founded by leading alternative education advocate, Jerry Mintz in 1989. Mintz has served as director of the organization since its inception, as well. The website serves as a resource center for many alternative education philosophies; providing articles, consultations, job listings for educators, and assistance in finding and/or starting alternative education institutions. I chose this website because Jerry Mintz has been a main proponent of alternative education for over 30 years, and his name is widely known and trusted throughout the homeschool community.

  10. Glynn, Sarah Jane. Fact Sheet: The Wage Gap For Women. 16 August 2012. 17 March 2014. .

This is a website containing facts about the gender wage gap. Its uses accurate information to show the subtle effects the gap has. This website also shows how the wage gap hasn’t budged in over a decade. I will use this information to make my argument stronger proving that it still exists today. I will also use this evidence to prove that it is not a myth and that there is statistical evidence to back it up. This will help with the context portion of my essay.

Powers, Sarah Jane Glynn and Audrey. Top Ten Facts About Wage Gap. 16 April 2012. 17 March 2014. .

This is a similar website containing a slight difference in information but still presenting the same argument. It points out the discrimination that is happening amongst some women because of their gender. I will use this information to provide the definition as well as the context of the essay.

This article is about understanding the narcissism epidemic that has been proven to be destructive to American society. The focus on self-love and admiration has created a grandiose fantasy which has led to a retreat from reality causing economic debt, and the performance of illegal acts. This article will prove to be beneficial in providing information on narcissism and its use of social media as fuel. It will help to prove my claim that the increase of narcissism in society correlates to the use of social media sites.

This article provided information on narcissism and its connection to online social networking sites. It provided information of a study conducted by York University with male and female recruits owning Facebook accounts. This article will help in providing data to support my claim that narcissism is linked to the use of social media.

Kelsey's project here is a very useful tool for giving off information on child pageantries. She includes reliable sources along with some highly useful facts. She expresses both pros and cons in the paper as well.

Nauert, Rick. “Child Beauty Pageants May Be More About Parents”
    October 29, 2012
    http://psychcentral.com/news/2012/10/29/child-beauty-pageants-may-be-more-about- parents/46818.html
Rick's paper is very informative. He speaks of Cartwright's observations on pageantry where she would describe parents living through their children's achievement, and often pushing them beyond their limits. She also tells how parents would tell her that they'd feed their children sugar sticks and energy drinks to keep them up for crowning.

I'm using both sources to address my question. I feel they really help me get my point across and also back me up.
