Directions: Write a paragraph from a contending source (to act as the counterargument to your argument). Answer one or more of the following questions: What might people who disagree with you have to say? What is the most rational argument from those nay-sayers? Where would you go to find a rational argument from those people? Due: April 9th before 4pm.

ReplyDeleteStudies of the juvenile boot camp system have been done by ciritcs to prove that the boot camps do not reduce recidivism. In fact the critics claim the juveniles endure abuse and mental trauma as they would in a traditional correctional facility. This argument may have some foundation based on other studies and it is an issue in some of the boot camp facilities. The studies have shown statistics for recidivism comparing the rate with traditional facilities and in some cases the rate is fairly close. This claim may be accurate, but there is a degree of success that can be seen in contrast to the juveniles that have not had the opportunity to have the education and mental health services available in the boot camp system. DeleteAfter researching multiple sites, I came across an article called “A call to repentance, Christians & conspiracy Theories. The article speaks of conspiracy theories being like a roller coaster ride fun and exciting but not real. The article uses multiple passages from the bible to make one believe Jesus Christ is against conspiracy theories.
ReplyDeleteThe article states “concerning the things of this world, Jesus says, “Fear Not.” It is not a suggestion, it is a command. He says this about real, present, even mortal dangers. For Christians, conspiracy Theory can be rejected simply by this. If adulterous lust is forbidden by Christ then should Christians indulge in materials or situations that obviously stoke lust? Can we not discern when fear is being stoked? As with lust, such dalliance can be thrilling at first, but to continue in it will ruin your life. Conspiracy Theory is a perspective and philosophy which encourages what is specifically forbidden by Christ Jesus, and which does not go away after the story or ride is over. If you only get one point, let it be this. Conspiracy Theory is fear of men. Simple, disloyal fear. Jesus said, “DO NOT fear.”
There are many other passages the writer uses in this article, but I am only going to use one for this blog.
Adulterous lust is forbidden by Christ, and Christians should not indulge in materials or situations that obviously stoke lust, dalliance, or thrills and if they continue to indulge it will ruin their lives.
Pro-creation comes to mind when reading this, the Lord created Adam and Eve to pro-create and populate the amazing world he created. Adam and Eve shared lust, one can assume they figured out what parts they had and used them to pro-create. The bible states the body is a holy temple, and one should wait until marriage to have sexual intercourse. Sexual intercourse creates very strong sensations in the body; many do it often for this reason. Does this mean that it will ruin your life if you continue to do it? I do not think it will.
I also believe that one can look at many different religions and religious beliefs as a conspiracy theory. A conspiracy theory can be a belief in something that is not in plain sight. To believe in something that is not in plain sight, to praise it, to live by a book created by man that claims to be interpreted for the Lord seems unrealistic, yet there are many believers that follow and live by the rules in this book.
Just so we are all aware, I do believe in a higher power giving us life. I am not so sure we should live our lives according to the bible that claims to be translated and interpreted for the Lord. Humans make errors, translations get lost, and too much trust can lead to vulnerability. ( This document is at http://www.acts17-11.com/conspire.html )
All the while people might say that supporters of the introverts and extrovert concepts shouldn’t be able to have the ability to put people into two separate categories. This is coming from the idea that no one person is the same or that no one is truly an introvert or truly extroverted. And considering that the term ambivert is in the middle of the spectrum scale of introversion and extroversion, those people who believe in not giving what most would say stereotypes to people, then they would be right. But those terms are not about labels it is more about how everyone’s their own person, and that there are people who tend to use their energies in specific ways, whether it be inward or outward. Which can be disagreeable because as John Zelenski a psychology professor at Carleton University puts it, that it is all circumstantial it’s about personal preferences and that introverts got to get out of their own mind set to be truly happy in this world. He mentions his “cure”, which is that introverts can become extroverts if they really pushed themselves to be. He also states that the ultimate result of introverts portraying themselves as extroverts will lead to most introverts to truly happier lives. To clarify there is nothing wrong with being an extrovert. People being extroverted is not a bad thing, although this controversy cannot be “fixed” by introverts faking who they are all the time. Over time it will just become exhausting and demeaning to how introverts function and how introverts see themselves. Why should introverts get more attention? It is not really about attention it is more about learning to understand where people are coming from and how they react to situations.

There are problems with the way that people with mental illnesses are treated. Since the shut downs of many mental hospitals mostly jails and prisons are now given the job of caring for the mentally insane. Correctional facilities are not prepared for this kind of work but in the last couple of years the jails and prisons have become more adapt at caring for their criminal patients. Vivian Yee of the New York Times says that in the year 2013 that the city Correction Department will be transferring the mentally ill to an internal clinic where trains psychiatrists can help with treatment and medicine. The less serous mentally ill will receive counseling programs to help change their future behavior and when they are done with the counseling they can be set back into a regular jail setting. With this new way at caring for the mentally ill the mistreatment that they revive in the prisons and jails will decrease and the mentally ill can get the help they need.
ReplyDeleteAm just curious about the source of the funding for internal mental health clinics would come from with the correctional system having so many issues with overcrowding and barely able to stand on its own feet. It is a valid argument to say the mental health of inmates needs to be addressed, but I believe that the system needs an overhaul rather than adding more burden to the present correctional system. If someone is so mentally ill or disabled, they should be evaluated before being incarcerated. I do appreciate the direction you are headed with your paper though and do agree that it is a big issue and feel that too many that need help are slipping through the cracks. Very good points.
DeleteThough there are many theories and studies conducted for the the increase of narcissism in American society sucha as the consistent use of social media, the idea of narcissism stemming from treatment as a child still remains the most significant link to the personality disorder. Narcissism is defined as a person that is excessively preoccupied with self adequacy and vanity. Narcissism is formed young in life and is determined by either a lack of love, attention and care from the child's parents or too much attention and love. This causes the child to either create a false image of self as protection from emotional distress or an ego filled with an attitude of entiltlment.
ReplyDeleteI have a few questions, like what theories and what studies address narcissism? What media is portraying that theory/s? There maybe other links to personality disorders besides treatment as a child. Are you going to address those other factors in your paper? How can too much attention and love lead to narcissism? How can you be certain that it starts at a young age? Can there be other factors that play into how Narcissism forms after a period of time after childhood? Do you think that in certain situations if there is no way around it, that the best thing is to create a false image because being themselves can be more destructive without those walls and barriers of self protection?
DeleteRecord companies created record deals for the emcees, and then America's corporations marketed the albums produced along with the related fashions and technologies. In Nas's 2006 song, "Hip-Hop is Dead," he addresses the topic of Hip-Hop's mainstream music as being "dead" in the sense that Hip-Hop's true message is no longer in the lyrics of today's rap stars. Rather, the lyrics in other rappers songs in 2006 promote commercialism, materialism, and the degradation of women. For example, one of the lines in his song are, "Oh I think they like me, In my white tee/You can't ice me, we here for life B." He quotes lyrics of a song from Dem Franchize Boyz "White Tee," and seems to mock them, and artists like them, in that their diamond coated materials are not real Hip-Hop culture, and that it can't overpower real Hip-Hop culture's individuals. Even though songs from artists like Dem Franchize Boyz do not promote Hip-Hop's real message, Nas seems to still leave the fact in his lyrics that real Hip-Hop music and culture still exists, just not in the mainstream. Wouldn't this mean that Hip-Hop's true essence is still present in our lives and that it hasn't stopped? Even so, how impacting is the music that stays true to Hip-Hop compared to the music that doesn't?
ReplyDeleteI haven't read your paper yet so you may have already addressed this, but what IS hip hop's real message. I agree that it certainly isn't diamonds and luxury, and I would hope that its something deeper than "We're still here". This could possibly be a good paragraph of context. What is the overall message that real/underground hip hop is trying to convey to their audience?
DeleteWhen looking into the wage gap, there are many factors that come into play. You simply cannot blame the wage gap on gender alone. There is a definite wage gap, however, some of the issue can be explained. Women are sometimes the care givers of the home. Some women may look at the job's flexibility, time off, and benefits rather than looking at a job specifically for the salary. This can explain why there is still a gap between the wages of men and women. Also, women may take a job that is more associated with women such as librarians, secretaries, or day care providers. The jobs do not make as much money as Deep Sea Tuna Fisherman, fire fighters, and oil drillers. These are much more physically demanding jobs and more dominated by men. This could also be a valid reason why the wage gap still exists.
ReplyDeleteWhat about the fact that there arent as many female CEO's as there are male CEO's? Would this play at all into it? A little bit of sexism in how women are hired??? Hmmmm???
DeleteThis! Is a work in progress. It is best to just look away, go watch a baseball game, go drink some nice wine, perhaps even get some sleep, in order to not read this. Just saying. ;)
ReplyDelete"In a bout of conflict, Washburn wonders if it is correct to call Buddhism strictly a philosophy or not. Maybe he is wrong in assuming this. So in order to give a well based and well grounded paper, he analyzes the case of Buddhism being a religion. By stating this case, he realizes that perhaps there is indeed a case to be made. However, he still notices some major flaws in this."
Yea I'm not athletic like that, I'm under age, it's only 8:00pm, and this is for a grade, sorry buddy. What flaws did he see? What his credibility does he have to take on this case?
DeleteChild pageants can help a girl work on her confidence. And later in life, the confidence it builds regarding speech can help her excel during interviews, since she has already been practicing interviewing during pageants. Pageants are also a way of teaching girls how to take rejection when they don't win. They can use the experience they gained from losing a competition later on in life and realize that it's not over just because you didn't get it this time. There are always other opportunities out there.
ReplyDeleteJust playing devil's advocate here so don't get angry.
DeleteI do not believe it is healthy for a child to participate in pageants. There are many other ways to build a child's confidence and teach them the skills they will need in life. Placing a child in a sport like baseball, soccer, volleyball or even in band, teaches the child about rejection and allows them to gain experience. This world is also placed into ones head that you have to be sexy, skinny, and smart in order to succeed. Which is clearly a stereo-type and the wrong way to teach our children. These children are so young and so vulnerable. I feel that it is wrong to place a child in front of a world so corrupt and full of pedophiles.
